Batteries

Most modern electronic devices, such as smartphones and digital cameras, utilize rechargeable batteries, and they can be charged at the vast majority of safari properties across Africa.

Camps/Lodges

Bring at least one spare battery and charger for cameras. All of the camps in your itinerary have electricity and you will be able to recharge phones and batteries; if you are unable to charge your battery in your room/tent, you will be able to do so in the common area. By taking two (or more) batteries, you can alternate between them and, while one is charging, you will be able to use the other. Safari vehicles increasingly feature USB charging ports, allowing phones to be charged on game-drive, but don't count on this - always charge your phone in the room before going out on drive.

Mobile Camps

Certain walking and canoeing safaris do not offer any opportunity to recharge batteries, and you will need to take additional batteries for cameras or a portable battery charger for phones. For "overland camping safaris" you will have brief opportunities to charge batteries in the vehicle using the 12v cigarette lighter socket - take the necessary cord and adapter for recharging, and at least two or three batteries per camera.

Transformers and Adapters

Almost all modern electronic equipment comes equipped with built-in transformers that will convert 220v electricity to 110v (and vice versa). So it is very unlikely that you will need a converter (but please confirm this by consulting your instructions manual). You will need an adapter plug though so that your recharger can be plugged into the sockets that you will encounter in Africa - this is covered in detail under Electricity and Adapters.
