Some General Advice
- DRESS CODE: There is no official dress code at any of the places you will be staying and you should be able to put your “bush clothes” to good use on all legs of your journey. [insert custom information]
- COLORS: To fit in with your natural surroundings (and look authentic in your safari photos) we suggest packing clothes in “bush” colors (dark khaki, sage green and olive green) – avoid brightly-colored black, white, or patterned clothing. - MATERIALS: We generally recommend taking clothing made of natural materials – cotton, linen, wool, and leather – on safari as these are normally more comfortable and aesthetically authentic than man-made fabrics. However, synthetic fabric technology has come a long way and, if you choose to use synthetics on safari, please feel free to do so and just ignore the specific fabric suggestions below. - ACTIVITIES: Game-drive attire is largely a matter of personal choice (see layering suggestions above), but walking does have a few requirements. If you will be walking you must wear neutral colors so that you are less obvious to wildlife. Also, consider a pair of trousers for walking in all seasons, as they save your legs from getting scratched by the spiky grass and bushes. If you are fair skinned you will want to wear a lightweight long sleeve shirt to shield you from the sun. A good hat and sunglasses are indispensable for all activities. Perhaps most important of all for walking is a very comfortable pair of boots, shoes, or sneakers. Lightweight hiking boots that extend over your ankle are always a good choice. If you will not be going on walks in the bush you can don whatever footwear is most comfortable for you. A pair of waterproof sandals, such as Tevas, will be useful for many activities and for siesta-time in camp.
- SIESTA-TIME: Cotton shorts and sandals will be handy for wearing on activities when the weather is warm, and for relaxing around camp through the heat of the day; also take your swim suit, as most of the places where you will be staying have pools.
- LAUNDRY:
- ELECTRONICS: If you will be taking a re-charger for your camera batteries, please remember that voltage is 220. Also, you will need an adapter plug. Please refer to Everything You Need to Know (Electricity and Adapters) on your personalized website for specific information. We recommend that you use caution if taking electronic equipment (such as laptop computers) with you on safari as they may be damaged or possibly stolen.
- VALUABLES: Please do not put any valuables in checked luggage and be sure to lock your luggage with a TSA approved lock. There is a shrink wrapping service offered at Johannesburg International Airport. (only include if they pass through Johannesburg)
